North Adams is the Renaissance town of the Berkshires. For much of its early existence, North Adams was a mill town. The town prospered and eventually became one of the world’s leading manufacturers of printed textiles. The Arnold Print Works was a huge employer until low cloth prices and the Great Depression devastated both the business and North Adams.
After the Depression, North Adams became a major research and development center for semi-conductors and thrived on the consumer electronic market. Sprague Electrical, who once employed 40% of North Adams’ work force, closed its doors in 1985, destroying the local economy.
In the 90s Mass MoCA, the largest center for contemporary and performing arts in the country, provided the impetus for an economic transformation in the region centered on cultural, recreational, and educational offerings.
Today, North Adams thrives with well-regarded restaurants, contemporary art galleries and cultural organizations. The restoration of North Adams real estate stock is an exciting aspect of the town’s renaissance.

Many thanks for talking with me recently about selling my property in the Berkshires. Clearly, in your 30 years as a business broker you have earned the respect that so many people I have spoken with have expressed. I am grateful to you for so generously sharing your time, expertise and advice. It has been tremendously helpful in clarifying the process and determining next steps. I will keep you posted.
